The presenters, Rory Hornstein and Cory Fagan, are two professionals from Calgary who are developing expertise in ME/CFS and FM through working with patients of Dr. Eleanor Stein, MD. Ever wanted to talk to a kinesiologist or a dietitian who “gets it”?  

Presentation 1. Recommendations for physical activity and training with ME/CFS and FM, presented by Cory Fagan
Cory and Dr. Stein have been working together for a few years offering the Stephens Protocol 2 day exercise testing. Cory will share what he is finding and how the results in individuals with ME/CFS compare to healthy individuals that he works with as part of his training facility TCR Sport Lab in Calgary.  His topics include:
- “you are not faking, something is off”. 
- Physiological data to support ME/CFS.
- Using heart rate and test results to “train” optimally.
- Using cyrotherapy to improve recovery from activity.

Presentation 2. Using gut bugs to be healthy and lose weight, presented by Rory Hornstein
Ever wondered how you could have managed to put on weight over the years despite dieting the entire time? Turns out our gut bugs may be creating oversized guts. That’s one of the suggestions given as to why some suffer from obesity while others don’t. Some bodies are predisposed to being that way thanks to the microbes inside them. This session will explain how microbes influence how we eat, what we eat, how we get energy from our food, protect our immune system, help us harvest calories and produce key vitamins and nutrients. Explore what we can do to cultivate and enrich the critters in our gut on the path to better health.  This workshop delves into the ratchet effect and how dieting can actually make you gain weight. You will also find out what a healthy weight is and how where you wear your fat may be more important than how much fat you actually have. You will learn about the types of energy balance and how to adjust your energy balance to achieve a healthy weight goal.

About the presenters:

Cory Fagan,  BPE(Hons), MSc has a passion for sport and applied sport science that led him to create TCR Sport Lab in 2006, along with Jill Sagan, Janet Lattimer-Skeith and Rick Skeith. TCR is a company built on inspiring and training the athlete within. The majority of TCR’s clients are involved in endurance related activities and sports. After completing an undergraduate Honours degree in Physical Education in 1996, Cory went on to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology in 2000. His studies focused on advanced methodologies of exercise testing, strength training for athletes and applied exercise physiology. Bike racing, triathlon and running are Cory’s current interests and enjoyment. However, throughout his career, Cory has also competed in and coached power sports, such as Jr. Hockey, Track and Olympic Weightlifting. He was the strength coach for the University of Calgary Men’s Hockey Team and the National Women’s Hockey Team. Cory has also been the head strength and conditioning coach for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Athletics program from 1999-2005.

Rory Hornstein, RD, BEd. is a Registered Dietitian specializing in nutrition for sports, exercise, weight management (adults and pediatric/adolescent), eating disorders and body image, food intolerances/allergies, immune system enhancement, and digestive disorders. Rory is the Nutrition Consultant to the Glencoe Club, Heavens Fitness, Calgary Weight Management Centre, and to Mount Royal University recreation services in Calgary. She is the designated person for nutritional consultation at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic, Division of Gastroenterology at The University of Calgary through her private practice. An AFLCA certified Fitness, Rory has had over 14 years experience. Her goal is to educate by integrating her knowledge and skills in the fields of nutrition, fitness and health promotion. Rory is a certified Bariatric dietitian empowering her clients to become “intuitive eaters” and reach their goals; one bite at a time.
